Well, it seems like I've been working non-stop on this site for weeks, but it's probably only been a few days.

In any event, things are finally beginning to settle down now. The move to Lunarpages really helped solve some problems - post by email is working very well now, no more errors in the event log!

Today I finally had a chance to do some performance tuning. There are several configuration settings having to do with caching and compression. Turns out the defaults were less than ideal - a couple of changes and the entire site is MUCH quicker! One change was to switch from using disk to memory for the server cache, that helped quite a bit. The biggest improvement though came from enabling compression. Apparently most browsers can now handle compressed content. Even Opera, the slowest of the big 4, got a LOT faster. I also noticed that Opera no longer has trouble loading the tab bar graphics on the initial load.

There is still one problem with the search indexing routine filling up the database, which I have reported; for now I will have to run it manually, but since the site does not change all that often that's not too big a deal.

I'm going to give it a few more days with the existing users and then it will be time to bring the "pastro" users over.

Dear William: Thank you for all your work on the new website. It works very well and is a big improvement for the PAS, definitely more user friendly! Heidi
